Sachi Suzuki

An interview with the personable Sachi Suzuki, so stylish you would never think she’s the mother of a 2-year old

鈴木サチ
Which part of your outfit today do you like?
The sneakers! There’s a really nice contrast between the red and gold colors. I also really like the balance between the bright socks and the sneakers.

Do you normally wear a lot of casual clothes? What’s your main point of interest for that?
I wear a lot of casual clothes. I’m a mother, so I have a lot of opportunities to wear sneakers. But unlike heels, they don’t look good from a fashion sense, so I try to cover them up with denim and tops.
鈴木サチ
You don’t look like a mother of a 2-year old; what’s your secret?
Oh, I don’t know about that (smiles). But recently I’ve not been trying to stay thin. I emphasize my good points, and do my best to keep a sharp figure. I do pilates and go running, which helps keep my core muscles strong.

You like running marathons too, don’t you? How did you get into that?
Well, to put it simply, I just wanted to go to Hawaii (laughs). I was thinking of trying the Honolulu Marathon sometime. And then someone suggested I try the Tokyo Marathon. I ended up not being able to because I was pregnant, but I’ve always wanted to. Especially recently, I’ve been getting more and more interested in doing long-distance races.
鈴木サチ
So, long-distance running gets you in shape?
Yeah, it’s a great full-body exercise! But I’ve heard doing full marathons can also place a lot of stress on the body internally. Running seems to be good for me though. I always feel good after running. I don’t have much free time though, so I only run about twice a week.

With such a busy lifestyle, how do you manage your time?
I get that question a lot. If you’d asked me that a year ago, I would have said there was no way, every day I was going 100 percent. But my children are getting older, so I don’t really have to pay constant attention like I used to, or rather I’m able to more effectively spend my time now. I manage my time more carefully, so whenever I get a free moment, I always try to fill it up with things I like to do.
鈴木サチ
Is there anything new that you’re into lately?
Exercise, as you could probably guess! At the moment I’m really into pilates, and I’m studying to get my instructor’s license. When I have a break from work I go to the pilates studio, after I get home from work I do pilates, and after I put my children to bed, I open the textbook and study. I really enjoy those moments! They’re great for getting rid of stress.

You’re really living life to the fullest. Where do you see yourself in ten years?
I’d tell my future self to be sure to maintain my figure and my attitude! I think it would be nice to be living overseas with my family, and by then my children will be in junior high school. I want them to be fully immersed in doing the things they love.
鈴木サチ
As a mom you must be looking forward to watching your children grow and develop. Who do you consider to be the ideal mother?
My own mother. She was before, and she still is now. She’s not the warm and fuzzy type, but rather strict, with others as well as with herself. But not with everything (smiles). Even now, I think it’s so nice when mothers are able to lead their own lives, and do the things they love. That’s the kind of mother I want to be.
